The footbridge is location approximately 1 km downstream of the Whakapapa Intake, NZMS 260 S19: 226-295.
The minimum flow at the Whakapapa River at Footbridge is 3 cubic metres per second.
Flow at this site can drop below 3 cubic metres per second as a result of Genesis Energy abstracting water provided that when flow drops below 3 cubic metres per second, immediate action is taken to restore flow. The flow should not be below 3 cubic metres per second for more than one hour and the flow should not fall below 2.8 cubic metres per second.
Flow in the Whakapapa River may fall below 3 cubic metres per second naturally when Genesis Energy is NOT abstracting water.
Recreational releases will occur from Whakapapa Intake on two separate weekend days within 1 February - 1 October in any year. These releases will only occur if the natural flow in the Whakapapa River is greater than 16 cubic metres per second. The dates for recreational releases are set in agreement between Genesis Energy and the New Zealand Recreational Canoeing Association.
